Alja Horvat, 23 years old illustrator based in Slovenia. Best known for her bold, female portraits, she has a thing for combining bold patterns and creating the most outstanding color combinations. Combinations that spark the inspiration behind our collaboration as well.  Young and creative, she’s the perfect artist soul we wanted to work with in our first artist collaboration. MEET ALJA  The Slovenian artist was listed among Forbes 30 under 30 in early 2020. Alja, where did you find inspiration for designing the new EQUA bottle cover? The inspiration came from the fact that we all need time for ourselves in our daily lives. I believe self-care is a very important thing and that taking care of our body and mind will help us improve overall health and mood in the long run. Could you describe to us your creative process behind designing EQUA bottle? First, I usually start collecting pictures that I really like and that represent the "mood" of the design I will be working on. Normally I find these pictures on Pinterest and once I have them all collected, I create a moodboard. After that I do a black and white sketch on my graphic tablet, and later I start working on the colours. While drawing, I always listen to the music, it helps me relax and stimulates my creativity. Alja Horvat x EQUA new bottle is a limited edition. Tell us what the three figures of women on the bottle represent? Do they have a name or story behind?  Sure, let’s meet my girls! I called them Beauty, Zen and Yogi. Each girl on the cover is doing her own thing, but they all represent their “self-care moment". One is painting her nails, the other one just came out of the bubble bath and the third one is doing yoga. I illustrated them as a reminder that every woman should sometimes hit a pause on life and treat herself in her own way. How would you describe your style, approach to graphic design? I think my style is very colourful, vibrant and maximalistic. I love patterns from the 60s and 70s and I always try to incorporate loud colours or prints from these two eras. A lot of my illustrations revolve around nostalgia and longing for moments we have to ourselves.  Do you take care of your hydration while creating your art? Of course, I drink water all the time. It’s the first thing I do in the morning. Do you have any beliefs or rules that you live by? I believe in a positive mindset, if you think positively many great things can happen to you, this has been proven to me so many times. Collaboration with EQUA. How come? How did you decide to work with  our brand? I can’t really remember how our collaboration actually started, because we've been working on this project for so long, but I’ve always loved EQUA brand and what you are doing, especially regarding the environmental impact you have on the planet. I’m so glad that we had a chance to work together and create such a beautiful design. ''Once is a chance, twice is a coincidence, third time's a tradition.''  After 2 successful collaborations with our favorite fashion designer Nina Šušnjara, we couldn't do differently than go for another one :) and if you've been a part of the first or/and second collaboration, you can assume that this time it's gonna be BIG. I found the inspiration in perfection and everything that is wrong with it. The perspective from which most people perceive perfection is in my point of view mishandling, as the criteria of perfection are burdening, limiting, and judgmental. What if we find perfection only in imperfection? Imagine the world where we accept and appreciate our “flaws”. The world where our weaknesses suddenly become our strength and the source of our powerful uniqueness. Freedom. Peace. Gratitude. I believe this is the way to truly notice the beauty of the essence, that this whole time was hidden elsewhere than we originally sought. Within. How would you style the bottle bag? Our perfectly imperfect bottle looks great on different styles. Personally, I would style it with sportswear or street style. The colors we used are nude and black and they go with pretty much all colors. For this particular accessory, I love monochromatic outfits where the bottle bag really stands out. How does EQUA help you stay hydrated? It was a challenge I’m not going to lie. Mainly because my job isn’t that regular 9 to 5 office work, or as many might think “glamourous”, but it’s more like fieldwork. Not only that my lifestyle is busy but it gets really physical really fast :) Years ago water became my no.1 friend and honestly, I struggled with keeping hydrated not because I didn’t have a bottle of water but because I needed to put it somewhere while I run around with gazillion dresses, fabrics, and bags. So, we came up with the idea to design a cool crossbody bottle bag where our hands are still free and we can do whatever we need to do without being thirsty.   This is your 3rd collaboration with EQUA. How come?   People who know me, know that my thing is loyalty. I mean where would we be if no one was loyal :) In the past we did two successful collaborations together and the future looks even brighter for us. I see EQUA as everything I believe in. A purposeful brand from my home country that stands for ecology, sustainability, strong messages, and important vision. Since the beginning of my journey, I believe in collaborations. Together we really can do better. All involved in this project believe in investing and taking care of things, but more importantly, taking care of ourselves, the people around us, and relationships between us. Just, like everyone else.   How can we, as individuals, live the most empowered life possible?  In the past couple of months, we were trying to inspire people to feel confident the way we are, teaching us all there's nothing we cannot achieve! However, as this year got tipsy when we least expected it, we all got shaken up by the events going in and around our lives, to the point many of us felt down again. So that low point is when it all started ... Our marketing & design team set down through a set of quarantine-zoom-calls in awe to find an inspiration for everyone that feels insecure, deprived, or in any sense down, including ourselves. From the PJ time of outfits (appropriate for long Zoom calls), to find a common idea, while being miles away from each other, to arguing and discussing the best storyline that could represent our best self. This February, EQUA made its debut in the fashion world, visiting all 3 major world known fashion weeks. From hectic days, runway shows, to meeting Influencers from all around the globe, we stepped on the scene on what’s to come with our favorite fashion Ambassador, Tesa Jurjaševič. The trendiest accessory to carry during Fashion Weeks? Water bottle. EQUA strives to incorporate designs, that will act sustainably, yet look flawlessly amazing. In this sense, it is important we always stay up to date – on what’s soon-to-be and how to make an impact. Our primary rule is to stay hydrated while looking good doing it.  . Perfect timing to get inspired is worldwide runways. As the fashion week excitement starts, most participants say goodbye to sleeping and eating, while waving hello to endless nights, deadlines, and a dozen outfit changes per day. And in this hectic time – water is a must. You have to make an impression – looking and feeling beautiful inside out. The latter confirms even Tesa, our beloved fashionista, who shared a glimpse behind the fashion weeks in our interview. . Hydration break, with a touch of fashion. 1 Tesa - you and fashion. What does it mean to you and how does it awaken your creativity? Fashion can be easily judged and compared as it is based on the looks, on one’s appearance, however it is also a form of art. It’s creative, full of passion and beautiful ideas that all come together in one single garment. And for me, fashion is not just love. It is a true passion, a way of expressing myself and a way of life. My love for it started quite early and I’m not really sure why I fell in love with it in the first place, but it’s something that has been a part of my everyday life and my identity for as long as I can remember. It definitely gives me an opportunity to be creative, to get inspired and hopefully to inspire! 2 When did you start participating in fashion week trills and how did that happen? First fashion week I’ve ever attended was the Milan fashion week in 2013 and to be completely honest, I can’t remember why and how I decided to go there. I believe I was influenced by other bloggers that would attend fashion weeks on a regular basis, I applied to a few shows and when I actually got invited to some of them, I decided to give it a try! What I do remember is that I had absolutely no idea what was I getting myself into, it was definitely quite different to how my fashion weeks look now, but it was a cute experience from which I’ve learned a lot.  3 Please portray one day in-between the shows. I’d wake up around 6:30/7 AM to have my usual morning routine, including proper breakfast, beauty touch, and smooth water intake. During fashion month I work with a special hair salon, so each morning their stylist would come to my hotel to do my hair. I usually leave the room around 10 AM (or earlier, it depends on a schedule). And after that, it’s pretty much running from one place to another. Fashion shows, events, and presentations are usually spread all over the city, so I’d walk up to 20km per day! Of course, on the go, I have to also take photos and prepare content for my social media, so lunch breaks are usually spent editing photos. In this regard, I always try to stay hydrated in between, as it keeps me looking fresh and energized at all times. I come back to my hotel room around 7/8PM, just to get ready for evening events, that can last up to 2 AM in the morning.  4 What are the must-haves in your bag when traveling from one fashion week to another? As far as beauty goes I’d say some sort of hair oil (as with airplanes and New York weather your hair gets out of control), a hand cream, face masks, and a good concealer to hide those dark circles! Additionally, a chic bottle that looks like a fashion accessory is just perfect to keep my appearance fresh & my mind focused on those hectic days. And of course, bandages are a must and also a good book and good music on your phone to pretty much keep you sane!  Chic bottle that looks like a fashion accessory is just perfect to keep your appearance fresh, no matter how hectic your days can be. We crave to please our taste buds, yet remain unaware of the health hazards that this style of eating might give us.   ''The best diet is the one that combines two attributes: foods which contain all nutrients essential for our body functions and the ones that boost our mood.''   It is of most importance to practice balanced diet, to stay hydrated and reach for the right nutrients in order to stay healthy and full of energy. And our culinary expert Ayatana is now sharing her story on how she started her journey to healthy dining and revealing her tips to a balanced diet. Meet Aleksandra, the founder of Ayatana Your interest in health goes back to your roots. When did you realize you want to become a gourmet expert and why?It came naturally and it wasn't strategically planned per se. I've always enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, either cooking or baking. Some of my first memories from the time I was very young are actually from the kitchen and I suppose I've been always interested in food. I started discovering plant-based food when I was faced with my health problems in my mid-twenties. This was a breaking point and from there onwards, everything changed in my life. I started focusing more on food in sense not just as something we eat but also as something that really fulfills our bodies. I decided to learn from the best, did my first online course and later onsite experience with Matthew Kenney Culinary Academy team and got a license from this amazing culinary school. Then I combined this with my love for cooking and voila, it happened.  .What do you want to communicate with the chosen branch of culinary? My intentions are not transforming people into vegans or trying to convince them that only plant-based lifestyle is the one that matters. I’d really like to introduce a plant-based food and a plant-based lifestyle as something interesting, different and really tasteful. I strongly believe that my role is in teaching people how to prepare nutritious, colorful, simple and fast plan-based plates. I thrive when I can show people how to add more vegetables and fruits in their diets. If someone decides to go vegan, great, if not that's ok too. Of course, I think as a society we have to pay more attention to the environment and protect animals. I guess once you start paying more attention to how and what you eat, this sensitivity organically enters your life without you even noticing it sometimes. What does the term balanced diet mean to you and how to achieve one? For me, a balanced diet is definitely structured from all the nutrients our bodies need to function well: proteins, vegetables, fruit, carbs, and fat. Among these, I always tend to choose wholesome ingredients which fill my body with vitamins, minerals, fibers & everything my body needs to stay strong and alive. I strongly believe the best diet is the one that combines two parts: getting all the needed nutrients in our bodies and the one that makes us feel good. This is why I never feel bad or guilty after eating a plant-based cake or some comfort food.  . How do you integrate drinking water into your daily routine? I find summer time much easier to drink water or rather I get reminded to drink more water due to higher temperatures. Drinking enough did not come naturally for me to be honest, I had to learn how to "track" thirstiness. What really helped me was the moment I started adding "extras" to my warm water, like lemon, ginger, turmeric, different herbs, and spices. Especially now in winter months.
